Reason #456 I will be happy to leave this house

So my kids won't be woken up on Friday nights in the fall by the sound of a #$&@%^&! cannon going off in the high school football field a block away from our house.

Cool (and true) story:

When I was in college, they did the stupid cannon thing as well. I lived in the dorms, so of course I could hear it every time it went off.

My fiancée (then girlfriend) and I were in my room and we were curious if our team was winning, so we turned on the radio. The game was broadcast by my school's radio station (I used to be a DJ there. It kicked ass).

As we were listening, our team made a touchdown and the cannon was fired. We heard the cannon on the radio before we heard it in real life. This is really impressive when you consider that the sound of the cannon travelled from the cannon itself, to the microphone, transmitted to the radio/TV building, transmitted to the station's broadcast tower in Spokane (about 15 miles away), then broadcast back to the radio in my dorm room. All before I heard it in real life. The distance from the cannon to my dorm room was less than half a mile. The total distance travelled by the audio I heard on the radio was over 31 miles.
