Earthquake!

Big enough to bring me out to post something about it. Early this morning (well...a half an hour ago as I post!), a 5.4 quake centered in southern Illinois woke us up. 5.4, people! That's over half as big as they come!

Leo was in the closet getting dressed, and I was still asleep in bed. I woke up feeling a little vibration...then I heard Leo say "Andrea?"...and then felt a big rattle. I remembered the one from 1987, and was grabbing the baby to get in a doorway, but it was over as soon as it started. Leo ran upstairs to check on the girls. It had woken Audrey up too, and she was scared and crying, but Aislinn (like Arwyn) slept through it.

I think it's cool. After the first jolt of fear, I realized what it was and knew it probably wouldn't get too bad. It's history! Audrey doesn't quite see it that way, though she said she's glad it actually woke her up from a bad dream.

I also think it's kind of funny that Bruce Kopp on Channel 13 News keeps asking people about damage, and his voice sounds a little disappointed every time people say not so much as a glass broke.

Yep, woke up, felt the rattle, heard the house creak, Tim was all wired and couldn't go back to sleep and got up, I did go back to sleep and neither boy had a clue.
I'm a little glad that I got to feel it, though, because in 1987, I was in a car and missed it completely. Sigh.

Ugh, that's local news for you. They're reporting the quake here in Spokane! I hate how our local news will tease a big story, then when they finally get to it, the story happened on the other side of the country. Local news, huh?

The day after my wife and I got married was the day that this earthquake happened. I had woken up less than 5 minutes before. Almost the entire state lost power (only Kauai, the island farthest from the epicenter, stayed online). Although the quake happened off the shore of the big island, Oahu was the most affected. Morah and I were stranded at the airport all day long waiting to catch a flight to Maui so we could start our honeymoon. We spent almost 12 hours in the airport before the power was restored.

I've never been in an earthquake. And I certainly don't want one, although it would be sorta neat to (safely) experience it.
