Leo's exciting day

This actually happened yesterday. But it is an incredible story.

Yesterday Leo drove a friend whose car had been recently stolen to a class. After the class, they hung around a little bit, offered a ride to another friend who had to get to work, and then headed back to our house so he could pick up another vehicle so his friend could borrow one of them for the day. As they got into town and were getting ready to turn off the highway, his friend yells "That's my car! Call 911!" His car that had been stolen was right in front of them.

(You need to understand that the car was stolen 20 miles away from where they saw it, and around here, that might as well be 100 miles. Different town, different county even. Stolen in a large city, found in a small town that the owner, and perhaps even the thief, did not even live in.)

So Leo got on his cell and called 911 to tell them they were tailing a guy in a stolen car, and the owner of the car was in the vehicle with him. There was a brief misunderstanding in which the dispatcher thought they were reporting a car as stolen, but Leo finally yelled "We're following it, we're on 31 turning onto Jefferson, get a car out to us!" They kept following, and Leo thinks the thief started realizing someone was on his tail, because he started making some weird turns, almost in a circle, and then ended up on South Main. South Main street ends up...where? Right in front of the police station, oh yes it does.

And just as they approached the police station, a police car caught up to them, and Leo gestured him to go! go! go around me! More cars were lined up to block the road, so Mr. Bad Boy was busted.

They cuffed him and stuck him in a cruiser, and came to talk to Leo and his friend. They had already taken the car into the garage to check it for evidence (is this out of CSI or what?), but promised as soon as they got everything out of it, Leo's friend could have his car back, and any belongings of his that were still in it. So Leo and his friend pulled around to the garage, but hung back across the street, as they didn't want to get in the way. And from this vantage point, they had the only view of Mr. Bad Boy stepping out of the cruiser and running away, hands still cuffed behind his back.

Leo yelled that the guy was running, but at first no one heard him (they were across the street, after all). His friend laid on the horn, finally catching the attention of a couple of cops, one of which ran after Mr. Bad Boy. Leo and his friend ran after him too, which I first thought was pretty foolish, but then realizing the guy was cuffed and unarmed, I guess he couldn't have gotten in too much trouble (but still!).

In the end, they caught the guy again, took him into the station, and booked him. The CSI people found enough evidence to lead them to believe he was on his way out of town right as they found him. They also found a screwdriver and a lug wrench on the front passenger seat. Thank goodness my husband IS smart enough to know to call the cops and not try to chase the guy down by himself.

That is the most incredible story I have ever heard. I bet Leo and his friend still had an adrenaline rush hours later.

In college, I had a friend who got his bike stolen and then later saw it in one of the bike racks on campus and stole it back. That is all.

No need for reality TV, it's right here in blogland.
Leo and buddy tailing a stolen car, cell phone, police station, running prisoner. TV script, I tell ya.
All's well that ends well.

I love it! Is Leo walking around today with a gleam in his eyes looking for a cold case or two to solve? I know Jay would be thinking he was a detective for weeks after an event like that!

Leo's a hero! Somtimes truth is stranger than fiction - what would the odds be that they would end up seeing the car that was stolen? Once in a while crime doesn't pay and I adore those moments...
