School days

Tomorrow we begin an adventure that will last for the next 13-17 years (add 4 more to that, really, to include the younger one's participation). Audrey's first day of kindergarten is tomorrow, and I'VE got first day of school jitters! That old feeling of excitement, mixed with the uncertainty of what the year will hold. It's not a bad feeling. I'd say I've got more of the excitement, and Audrey has more of the uncertainty. The first day is short, a half day anyway, and only one hour for kindergarten classes. The best part is: parents are not only invited, but EXPECTED to stay for this whole first, brief day! This is what they are calling kindergarten orientation.

As my homeschooling mommy friends gear up to begin their school year, I'm still a bit wistful that we are not doing that after all. I know it's for the best, for now. And I am ready to all but dive into volunteering in Audrey's classroom to stay as involved as I can in her education.

Tomorrow it begins.

When the first son went to Kindergarten, I was more than ready to send him off. He had so much energy that I knew he needed to be with other kids and have projects to do.
Second son, the world was not ready for him. So mature, thoughtful, logical. He is almost able to find his place in life's puzzle since he will be graduated college in December.
Youngest son, the afternoon he went to Kindergarten, I sat on the back porch with my feet on the railing, ate a dozen chocolate covered cherries, and finished a romance novel.
I look back at each of my sons in the picture by the flagpole on the first day of Kindergarten. That sense of awe and expectations, it never goes away. Now I feel it when I watch the neighbor kids walk by, wearing new shoes, with their backpacks still clean.

hope Audrey (and Mommy) had a GREAT first day!!!

I remember a story of yours truly being kicked out of Big Brother's kindergarten round-up. Seems he couldn't get a word in edgewise. :) Shocker, I know...

You'll love helping out in her classroom and getting to know her friends. It was nice to develop relationships with some of Keithen's classmates last year. There is still one sweet boy from his KG class who calls me "pretty lady" and asks if he can come help clean my house! :)
